Getting Upskilled through Type 1 Diabetes Education

Welcome to GU1DE - an online type 1 diabetes self-management education programme

About GU1DE:

Living with type 1 diabetes can be challenging, and having support helps with this journey. This support can take many forms, for example, immediate family, healthcare professionals, or structured education programmes. These can all give the person living with type 1 diabetes the skills necessary to manage this condition.

Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) is the gold standard for education available across the UK. There is an understanding and recognition that a period of time after diagnosis (known as the “honeymoon phase”) needs to pass before people start the 5-day course. In addition to this, there can be long waiting times to access the course, which has been further impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We wanted to increase access to education for all people with type 1 diabetes, whether they are newly diagnosed, have been diagnosed for a long time, or are carers or family members, etc. This gap in access to education has led to us developing a digital option to support “just in time” learning and facilitate a more flexible, skills-based approach to type 1 diabetes management.

How do I access the course?

We are seeking the support of people who live with type 1 diabetes to provide feedback by reviewing and evaluating the course. To gain free access to the GU1DE course please email the GU1DE team on ldcimpactteam@uhl-tr.nhs.uk
